Any of you who know us at Fire Dragon Hideaway will wear a wry smile when we start talking about coconuts. We are a little bit coco-nutty! He he … get it?
We prescribe something of coconut origin for any situation. Feeling tired? High fever? Feeling de-hydrated? Dodgy stomach? Allergic reaction? Too much sun? Urinary Tract Infection? Hangover? Eaten something you shouldn’t? Food too spicy? Eat coconut and drink coconut water and all will be well. You get the picture. It’s the most incredible all-fixing wonder nut … or is it a fruit? We’re don’t care, we love it.
Low in calories, naturally sweet, fat and cholesterol free, anti-fungal, anti-viral, more potassium than a bunch of bananas (very useful in the tropics when you’re body craves more salt), and super hydrating – coconut water is nature’s miracle. Apparently, you can even administer it intravenously. You’ll be relieved to know we haven’t tried!
To be clear, we recommend it directly from the coconut – as fresh as possible. There are an increasing number of coconut drinks out there and they might have added sugar and preservatives that may take away from this gorgeous super-food.
Coconut water has supported a number of our canine and feline family members through some dark times. When Gigi our dog had Filaria, couldn’t walk, and the vet used to look at him with eyes that said “that dog is not going to make it”; a bottle of fresh coconut water every day and every night for 3 months got him through. Coconut water has supported numerous tiny kittens that we’ve rescued from the street and who were too small or weak to receive any drugs. In fact, if any one of our animals shows signs of fever, malaise, vomiting or diarrhea we administer coconut water. The results are only ever positive. The flesh is a pretty sneaky way to clean an animal’s teeth and gums too!
So, if you’re in Asia and you’re feeling under the weather, or if you just want to boost your immune system and keep yourself hydrated in the hot sun, make fresh coconut water a daily morning habit and get the most of easy access to this refreshing, sweet and nutty water.
Wherever you are on the 1st January 2018, if you’ve been celebrating the New Year, reaching for a couple of glasses of coconut water will feel like a life saver!
If you’re interested to know the science behind our enthusiasm for coconut water, here are just 7 good reasons to drink it regularly. Dont’ even get us started on the multiple benefits of coconut oil 🙂
- Coconut water is packed with simple sugars, electrolytes, and minerals to replenish dehydration conditions inside the body.
- Research studies suggest that cytokinins found in coconut water found to have significant anti-ageing, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-clot formation effects.
- Coconut water is offered to patients with diarrhea in many tropic regions to replace the fluid loss from the gastrointestinal tract and to reduce the need for hospitalisation. The osmolarity of tender coconut water is slightly greater than that of Oral Rehydration Therapy solution. The presence of other biological constituents like amino acids, enzymes, minerals, and fatty acids may account for this higher osmolarity. Coconut water is very low in sodium and chlorides, but rich in sugars and amino acids.
- Coconut water is composed of many naturally occurring bioactive enzymes such as acid phosphatase, catalase, dehydrogenase, diastase, peroxidase, RNA-polymerases, etc. In effect, these enzymes help in the digestion and metabolism.
- Coconut water has a better composition of minerals like calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc than some of the fruit juices like oranges.
- An excellent source of the B-complex vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pyridoxine, and folates.
- Coconut water carries a good amount of electrolyte potassium. 100 ml of water has 250 mg of potassium and 105 mg of sodium. Together, these electrolytes help replenish electrolyte deficiency in the body due to diarrhea (loose stools).
Get out there and crack yourself a coconut!
