Elephant Orphanage

This is situated close Pinnawala on the way to Kandy so you can take a one day trip to Kandy and stop here on route. It is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, halfway between the present commercial capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence Kandy in the hills of central Sri Lanka. There are 7 elephants under protection. This facility attracts both local and foreign visitors, the income from which helps to maintain the orphanage.

 

Kandy

KandyThis is the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and is a major tourist destination, 115kM from Colombo at 465 meters above sea level. Famous for the Temple of the Tooth and many other temples the city could be called the cultural capital of the island. This bustling market town is rich in cultural diversity has plenty of itineries to offer to the tourists from songs dances and handy crafts to ancient temples and adventure activities. Kandy is a good transit point to the cultural triangle to the north or hill country to the south. The city is a good source of souvenirs or to experience many cultural performances. The evening cultural dance is something not to be missed. Together with all this you have the Royal Botanical Gardens and Gem Museum.

Sigiriya

Sirigriya Sri LankaThis is a huge cloud-hugging rock high above the surrounding plains to towering heights, and is regarded by many as one of 8th wonders of the world.The summit of this almost inaccessible rock was the unlikely setting for a courtly paradise of elegant pavilions, amid gardens and pools, all perched 180 meters (600ft) above the surrounding jungle. The rock was transformed into an immense recumbent lion by the addition of a brick-built head and foreparts of which only the artfully sculptured paws remain. The impact of the Lion Rock, as it is called, must have been awesome, since even its remnants are impressive. Executed daringly, on a huge scale, it prompts one to marvel at the creative vision that was behind its construction. This can be climbed and is a satisfying accomplish.

Dambulla

Dambulla Sri LankaDambulla cave temple also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla is a World Heritage Site (1991) in Sri Lanka, situated in the central part of the country. This site is situated 148 km east of Colombo and 72 km north of Kandy. It is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains.There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over 5 caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Lord Buddha and his life. There total of 153 Buddha statues, 3 statues of Sri Lankan kings and 4 statues of gods and goddesses. The latter include two statues of Hindu gods, the god Vishnu and the god Ganesh. The murals cover an area of 2,100 square meters.

Kalpitiya

Kalpitya Sri LankaKalpitiya peninsular is located at the end along the arm of the Puttalam Lagoon. It is considered an unspoilt marine sanctuary with a diversity of habitats ranging from bar reefs, flat coastal plains, salt-pans, mangroves swamps, salt marshes and vast sand dune beaches. Nearly twenty-four species of cetaceans are found along the coastal waters and five species of marine turtles nest in its beaches. Dugongs inhabit the lagoon and the coastal habitats provide nesting and feeding grounds for hundreds of species of resident and migrant birds, with its diverse vegetation and blend of lush green giving different textures at different seasons. Here you can take a boat and go whale & dolphin spotting.

 

Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya is located in the heart of central highlands of Sri Lanka and is often referred as the “city of light”. It is situated Nuwara Eliya Sri Lankaat a distance of about 180 Km from the Colombo city. This spot is popular in Sri Lanka  for tea production. The altitude of the city of Nuwara Eliya is about 2000 meter. This hill resort is one of the finest tourist attractions in Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya was termed as “Little England”. This place used to be a retreat for the European planters in Sri Lanka. Tourists in Nuwara Eliya can indulge into a number of recreational activities like golfing, hiking, boating, horse riding etc. The Ramboda Falls, Devon Falls, La  ksapana Falls are some of the most popular tourist spots near Nuwara Eliya. The lush green tea plantation fields are also major attractions to tourists. Nuwara Eliya is mainly popular for acres of tea plantation. Sri Lanka  is known as one of the largest tea exporters in the world and Nuwara Eliya is considered to be capital of the entire tea industry of this country.

Galle

GalleGalle is 116 Km. from Colombo by road or rail, down the south-west coast. Both routes are picturesque, following the coastline closely for much of the way. Galle-located 116 km to the south of Colombo on the It was founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. Galle has been declared a World Heritage City by the UNESCO.

Hikkaduwa

HikkaduwaThe beach of Hikkaduwa is situated 98 km from Colombo towards the south of Sri Lanka. This fun coastal town 14 kms from Galle was the first (1960′s) of Sri Lanka’s beautiful beaches to be discovered by tourists. Snorkeling and diving in the clear waters are the major past-time along this stretch and is the most environmentally friendly way to see the colorful fish that dart around. The coral sanctuary found on the coast of Hikkaduwa is a large shallow body of water enclosed by a reef, decorated with layers of multi colored corals; which is home to countless number of colorful fish. Off the beach there is a collection of tine islets surrounded by beautiful coral formations. Many species of fish and large turtles are found here.There are more than four different shipwrecks for diving enthusiasts to explore along with dive shops offering PADI courses and equipment. It is rated the second best surf spot in Sri Lanka.
